Advancing Bike Taxonomy

The world of bike retail is evolving, and at Auto Trader, we aim to provide retailers with the tools to deliver the best outcomes for their teams and consumer.

Our latest advancements in Bike Taxonomy represent a big step forward, offering retailers a seamless, data-driven solution to enhance efficiency, improve data quality, and elevate the user experience.

Here are a couple of key definitions:

· Vehicle Taxonomy: A structured system for naming, describing, and classifying vehicles.

· Derivatives: Specific vehicle details crucial to car buyers, such as body type, transmission, engine size, and more.

What’s changing?

We are enhancing how bikes are listed, searched, and sold by showcasing a comprehensive taxonomy tailored to the needs of modern retailers. This initiative ensures every Motorcycle Registration Information System (MCRIS) code from the past decade is covered, creating an accurate framework for bike listings.

Our new taxonomy will power Vehicle Registration Mark (VRM) lookups, offering bike retailers a streamlined and efficient listing experience.

We have carried out this work on 381 OEMs to make the most significant impact for retailers. This approach allows us to provide high-quality data and support for these brands that matter most to our customers.

What does this mean for retailers?

Efficiency Boost

Through VRM lookups, the new system automatically fills in critical details like make, model, and specifications. This reduces manual effort, speeds up the listing process, and ensures accuracy, freeing up time to focus on other part of the business.

Error Reduction

Standardising bike taxonomy minimises manual errors, ensuring consistent and accurate data. Retailers no longer need to worry about inconsistencies that could affect listings or market insights.

Enhanced Search Results

Clean and unified listings translate to a more refined search experience for consumers. Buyers can easily compare models, find what they need faster, and make more confident purchasing decisions.

Increased Market Insight

With improved data accuracy, retailers can gain further insights into performance metrics, pricing trends, and inventory strategies. This means smarter decisions, optimised pricing, and an edge in a competitive market.

Real Impact: By the numbers

  • 82% Coverage with Full Specs: Our advancements mean that 75% of used bikes will feature full technical specifications, with 98% coverage for new bikes.

  • 10 Years of Data: A taxonomy that covers a decade’s worth of MCRIS codes ensures every listing is backed by rich, reliable data.

  • 381 OEMs: Focused support for key manufacturers to drive the greatest impact.

Why is matters?

For retailers, these changes go beyond technical improvements—they represent a shift in how bikes are marketed and sold. A more accurate, efficient, and user-friendly system leads to improved consumer experiences, higher conversion rates, and a stronger competitive position in the marketplace.

Looking ahead

At Auto Trader, we are committed to empowering retailers with the tools and data they need to succeed. These advancements in Bike Taxonomy are just the beginning. As we continue refining our platform, we intend to work in partnership with retailers as we move forward.

Stay tuned for updates on our rollout and insights into how these changes are transforming the bike retail landscape.
